Liam Daly: Guitar Jackson Clarke: Guitar James Nicoli: Bass Matt Radford: Drums The well-known unpredictability and tumultuousness of Melbourne’s (where These Hands Could Separate the Sky were formed) weather forms a fitting metaphor for the musical disposition of one of Australia’s most promising young bands. Seamlessly weaving unsettlingly loud, swelling passages with beautifully delicate, ambient soundscapes, the music of These Hands Could Separate the Sky evokes imagery of a typical Melbourne day - that can have you wrapped in a sea of warmth one minute, and running for cover the next. The formation of the band was an incestuous affair, with ex-housemates joining ex band-mates to form the group they all hoped would be the vessel to carry them safely across the seas of obscurity, and to a place that would allow them to flourish musically – into a unique band with the passion that echoed their long-gone heroes. The pre-existing friendships provided a solid foundation on which These Hands Could Separate the Sky could build their sweeping soundtracks to life, loss, love and regret – and a shared adoration of mid-90s emo music, meant a common focus was formed with little need for compromise. Before long, (perhaps unwarranted) comparisons to heavyweights such as Mineral, Christie Front Drive, Unwed Sailor and The Appleseed Cast were being thrown about, and had things come to a halt then and there, These Hands Could Separate the Sky would have been happy with just that. However, the band continued to go from strength to strength. On the back of a demo and a handful of short but intensive tours, the band received unblemished reviews and made numerous ‘best records of 2007’ lists. After only their second east coast tour, These Hands Could Separate the Sky met Brisbane based Arrows, fell in love and released a 12” vinyl split which, like the demo, has been the subject of near unanimous praise, and a follow-up is due to be released 2008. In their short but busy existence, These Hands Could Separate the Sky have shared the stage with the likes of Pelican (USA), Sabretooth Tiger (USA), Mono (JPN), Minus The Bear (USA), The Nation Blue and Blacklevel Embassy – and their unique blend of musical influences, DIY ethics and unrivalled motivation give them the broad appeal to ensure their trademark sound will be introducing the uninitiated to the metaphorical Melbourne weather for a long time yet.
