The Follow

Factory Theatre, Sydney

17th December 2007

Emerging from the heart of Sydney’s alternative scene, the Follow are a band to fall in love with. And plenty already have – from the fans, who have permanently inked themselves with the band’s art and poetry, to big name artists such as Sonic Youth and Nine Inch Nails, who have invited the young band to tour with them in Australia. Forming just on four years ago, the Follow have built a reputation as a hardworking and dynamic live act, with comparisons made to the Cure, the Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins. Their first album, Empty Orchestra, written and recorded by singer-guitarist Azaria, was produced by Lee Ranaldo, legendary guitarist of Sonic Youth, who the band played with in 2004. When Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor heard the album he asked the Follow to support his band on their Australian tour in 2005. The band then toured the US, where they caught the attention of respected producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire) who chose to work with the Follow on their EP, Hope Your Happy. Released in June 2007, it marks their debut release through Warner records. Like many who have seen the Follow live, Launay was taken by the band’s magnetic appeal. “I have always been a fan of the wild, colourful and rebellious, and feel this has been something missing in rock ’n’ roll for a while”, he says. “I want not only the great songs, but an experience, a real show, a front person who takes you into their magical world. When The Follow came to my attention I just knew I had to make a record with them, and that they were all these things and more.” The Follow are: Azaria – singer-guitarist and part-time fallen angel; KJ – Chick bassist, who’s handy with a tool kit; Jak,, guitarist magician; and Reuben James, keeper of beats, a British expat who refused to go home. Follow HQ is downtown Newtown, Sydney’s artistic hub, where these musician-artists live and record in their old Victorian house – whipping up a chaotic alchemy of raw sounds, spirited rock, sticky love poetry and heart-thumping songs. This is dirty, danceable, dynamic rock. “If we were the love child of two bands, I’d say Sonic Youth and INXS,” says Azaria. "Dynamic guitar based dirty dance swamp sonic kick in your face with a kiss" “When we create songs it’s about the spirit and passion,” Azaria explains. “So a lot of it is raw and may seem naive and not resolved and that’s one of the important things about art that I like, like in paintings, where it doesn’t necessarily have to be refined. However i believe because we have been touring together, living together and creating together as a unit for over 3 years now, it has allowed us to have a strong focus on what really works for us live.” Says bassist KJ: “Rock is about change. The greatest movements in music were all about change and doing something that hasn’t existed before it.” The Follow are a family – lost souls who found each other – who understand the darker side of life, but surround themselves in a bubble of love with their extremely dedication to their live show, recording and fans of the Love Bomb Revolution.
