Rapaport

Factory Theatre, Sydney

14th June 2008

Rapaport (Joel Rapaport) is a 25-year old rapper/producer/guitarist from Inner West Sydney. Regarded as Sydney's most neurotic MC, Rapaport crafts witty, heartfelt lyrics with hard-hitting soulful beats. His lyrics reveal a frailty rarely seen in the macho world of hip hop. Rapaport tackled the battle stereotype head on when he won the 2006 Scribble Jam NSW MC Battle, and then came runner up in 2006 Scribble Jam Australian Final, surprising opponents with his humble demeanor and killer punchlines. Rapaport's journey in this competition is the subject of the documentary Aussie Battlers funded by JTV, and scheduled for screening on ABC television in 2008. Rapaport has a degree in Contemporary Music from the University of Western Sydney, and fronts the costume-wearing, live hip hop band 'The Phonies' (Keepin’ it Fake EP due 2008). He also plays guitar in Afro-funk band 'Usutu' and funk/latin band 'Mamacita'. Since the beginning of 2007 Rapaport has focused on writing and producing his debut EP Laughing on the Inside (due early 2009). Using a combination of samples and live instruments, the songs range from banging soul sing-alongs, to bone-crushing synth anthems.
